Criterion 5 covers the faculty — how many there are relative to students, how well qualified, how long they stay, what training they take and give, what they do beyond teaching, and how they are appraised.

It is the one chapter of the SAR that computes a self-assessment score for itself, section by section, arriving at 146.33 of 150. The shortfall is entirely in one place: the Faculty Qualification Index, which averages 16.33 of 20. Every other section self-assesses at full marks.

The department is served by 8 EC faculty plus faculty from science, humanities and other engineering departments who teach into the programme on fractional load — 22 people in total appear in the FDP participation table.

Student-Faculty Ratio (SFR)

Student–Faculty Ratio is N/F, where N is the sanctioned intake plus lateral-entry students actually admitted and F is faculty count adjusted for fractional load — a faculty member who teaches 25% of their load into EC counts as 0.25 of a faculty member here.

Because N uses sanctioned intake rather than actual admissions, the ratio is calculated on 90 students a year while actual enrolment is well below that. The three-year average SFR is 17.97, comfortably inside the 25:1 norm, and the chapter self-assesses at 25 of 25.

All faculty serving the programme are regular; the department records no contractual faculty in any of the three assessment years. Regular faculty count 11 in 2023-24 and 2024-25 and 7 in 2025-26.

The full faculty table gives, for every individual, qualification, specialisation, the percentage of load carried into the EC programme in each of the three years, papers published, designation, date of joining and association type. Eight are EC-specialised: Mr. S. J. Chauhan (HOD, M.E. Communication Systems, joined 1993), Ms. M. K. Pedhadiya (M.Tech Wireless Communication), Dr. L. K. Patel and Dr. R. N. Patel (both PhD in EC), Mr. M. J. Dabgar, Mr. R. C. Parmar and Mr. N. J. Chauhan (all M.E. Communication Systems), and Mr. S. P. Joshiara (B.E. EC).

The remainder are science, humanities and other-engineering faculty teaching first-year and shared courses, whose EC load percentages are correspondingly small — several carry zero in one or more years.

Faculty Qualification Index

The Faculty Qualification Index is FQ = 2.0 × (10x + 7y) / F, where x counts faculty with M.Tech and y those with B.Tech, and F is the faculty count required to meet a 1:25 ratio — here 4.

The index fell between 2023-24 and the two later years, from 22 to 13.5, because the count of qualifying faculty dropped from 3 M.Tech and 2 B.Tech to 2 and 1. The three-year average is 16.33, which the chapter self-assesses as 16.33 of 20 — the only section of Criterion 5 not at full marks.

Retention is scored as the percentage of the *required* faculty complement retained, not of the actual headcount — and since 11 faculty serve a programme that requires 4, the figure comes out at 275% for both years measured.

Against a scale where 90% or above scores full marks, this self-assesses at 20 of 20. The department notes the arithmetic explicitly rather than presenting 275% without comment.

Participation is scored per faculty member on programme length: 1 point for a 1–2 day programme, 2 points for 3–5 days, 5 points for more than 5 days, capped at 5 points per faculty member per year. The assessment formula is 6 × Sum / (0.5 × RF), capped at 30.

Twenty-two faculty appear in the table. The totals rise sharply across the period — 60 points in 2022-23, 94 in 2023-24 and 96 in 2024-25 — and the distribution within them is the more telling figure: six faculty scored nothing in 2022-23 and only nine reached the maximum 5 points, against two scoring nothing and 19 of the 22 at maximum in 2024-25.

All three years exceed the cap, so the assessment is 30 in each and self-assesses at 30 of 30.

Organized/ Conducted FDPs and STTP by this department at State / National Level

The department organised 17 expert sessions across the assessment period — 9 delivered by industry professionals from organisations including Google, TCS, Bank of America and Synopsys, and 8 by academic experts from universities and research institutions.

The topic spread is contemporary rather than syllabus-bound: VLSI, IoT, AI-ML, embedded systems, cyber security, drone technology and HAM radio on the industry side; digital communication, antenna and RF design, semiconductor technology, quantum and emerging technologies on the academic side. Product development, Consultancy, Manufacturing contracts, testing contracts

Eight marks covering what faculty do beyond the classroom, which the department groups into three categories: civic duties (RTO help centre, election duty, government examination duty), educational contributions (GTU syllabus and lab manual development) and student career support (placement fairs).

Four design patent applications are recorded — three by Dr. R. N. Patel, all published (filed January 2022, February 2022 and January 2023), and one by Shri N. J. Chauhan filed in September 2025 and awaiting technical examination.

Syllabus development for GTU is the most substantial contribution, with eleven course entries across 2022-23 to 2024-25. EC faculty wrote or contributed to Electronic Circuits & Applications, Digital Electronics, Electronics Workshop, Industrial Electronics, Mobile and Wireless Communication, Circuit Design Tools, VLSI, Java Programming and Electronic Project-II — that is, faculty of this department helped write the curriculum the department is assessed on delivering. Faculty Performance Appraisal and Development System (FPADS)

Thirty marks on faculty appraisal. As a government institution the department does not design its own appraisal system — it uses the Gujarat state Karmyogi portal — so what it must demonstrate is that the system is well-defined, that it is genuinely implemented, and that it produces qualification up-gradation.

Faculty complete a Performance Appraisal Report annually each April through the Karmyogi portal, which replaced the earlier SATHI portal in March 2023. The PAR (Schedule-1) has four sections: basic information filled by the establishment section, self-appraisal by the faculty member, appraisal by the HOD as reporting authority, and review by the Principal as reviewing authority.

The scored part is Section III, worth 100 marks across 18 quantitative parameters in four weighted categories — work output (40 marks over 4 parameters, scored 1–10), personal attributes (30 over 6, scored 1–5), functional competency (25 over 5, scored 1–5) and organisational discipline (5 over 3, point-based).

The organisational discipline category is worth noting because it is purely procedural and self-enforcing: 2 marks for filing a property return before 31 January, 1 for submitting one's own PAR before 15 May, and 2 for having sent 85% or more of subordinates' PARs before 15 June. Two portals are used for two distinct purposes, and the department separates them carefully. Karmyogi carries the annual PAR, which passes from faculty to HOD to Principal and then to the Commissionerate of Technical Education — Class 2 lecturer PARs are retained there, while Class 1 HOD PARs go on to the Education Department.

The Cogent portal is used only when a faculty member becomes eligible for the Career Advancement Scheme under AICTE guidelines. Eligibility depends on PBAS points and requires a minimum of 60 out of 100 in each of the last five PARs — which is what makes the annual appraisal consequential rather than a formality.

Nine AGP advancements are recorded as complete across seven faculty members, with eligibility dates from 2016 to 2022. Two faculty appear twice, having advanced through successive scales. Self-assessed at 15 of 15.

Details of qualification up-gradation of faculty

Faculty are sponsored for higher study on a seniority basis, and five up-gradations are recorded — three complete and two continuing.

Dr. L. K. Patel completed a PhD on feature-based image registration using machine learning at SPU Mehsana (2019–2024) and Dr. R. N. Patel one on rectangular microstrip patch antenna design for satellite image vision systems at GTU (2014–2019). Mr. N. J. Chauhan has been pursuing a PhD on compact wideband microstrip patch antennas at GTU since 2022. Mr. M. J. Dabgar completed the AICTE QIP PG certificate in deep learning at NIT Surat in 2025 and is working through a BS in Data Science and Applications at IIT Madras, begun in 2021.
